Unexpected Perks Of Being A Fangirl
A fangirl is a female fan who supports her idol. The idol may be a dancer, a singer or an actor. She shows her dedication to her idol by supporting all of his or her activities, buying their merchandise, watching him or her perform onstage and by sending him letters. There are many causes why a normal girl would become a fangirl.
- You become socially and culturally aware.
Fangirls have built this intricate network through social media sites such as Twitter and Tumblr. This is where these girls, from everywhere across the globe, get to know one another. They discuss everything, from music to body image to whatever is happening in their personal lives. It is amazing how much you can learn about a culture or region through a few short exchanges among fangirls.
- Support.
The amount of love, support, and encouragement from the fangirl community is second to none! They've created such a safe space for one another. Your fellow fangirl is always there when you need advice, someone to vent to, or just someone to freak with.
- Female empowerment.
For some unfathomable reason, young girls are often berated for the things that they like. Bands, movies, and TV shows get written off because a majority of their fans are young girls. Why? What is so bad about being a female fan? Why aren't we allowed to be passionate about things? Nobody complains, or even questions it, when men legitimately fight each other over their favorite sports teams.
- You become pretty well-traveled.
Fangirls will show up and show out! They will travel miles and miles and to multiple locations to see their favorite things. You meet so many people and go to places you never thought you would all because of something that you love. Fan meet-ups are planned, conversations are had, and new friends are made.
- You literally have friends all around the world.
The connections you make with each other is one-of-a-kind. These friendships are born out of a common interest and are often started on social media. Before you know it, you exchange numbers and are planning on meeting up in real life. It's nice to be able to say that you have friends on other continents and that their couches are always open to you.
- There is never a lack of creativity.
Fandoms are full of insanely talented people! There are writers, sketch artists, singers, music producers, comedians, seamstresses, everything under the sun. Fangirls, the savvy humans that they are, see their opportunity and put their creations out for the world to see. These women use their connections to create businesses and make a profit. Fanfiction is being published and turned into movies. These creators are being recognized and written about in respected publications. Some of them run major brand-sponsored social media accounts. Fangirls are doing it big these days. Believe them when they say that being a fangirl is a full-time job.
